About OnlineGuitarTuner

OnlineGuitarTuner is a free guitar tuner that works in the browser. It is made for guitarists, from beginners to experienced players, who want to tune quickly without installing an app.

How it works

The tuner reads short blocks of sound from your microphone and measures the pitch with the YIN algorithm (de Cheveigné and Kawahara, 2002), refined with parabolic interpolation. The result is compared with the nearest string of the tuning you chose and shown in cents. A median of the last readings keeps the needle steady. In automated tests with synthetic guitar-like tones at 44.1 and 48 kHz, every string of every tuning was read within 2 cents.

The reference tones and the virtual guitar are synthesised in the browser with the Karplus-Strong plucked-string method. No sound files are downloaded.
